Unknown Island North

"Unknown Island North" is culled from Annie Dillard's 1977 "Holy the Firm". A metaphor for a new thought on the horizon, it is "a new island, a new wrinkle, the deepening of wonder." Dillard finds various names for it as she sketches this new thing onto her drawing of the Puget Sound islands visible from her window. I suppose here, in my own way, I am seeking to name the things that most capture my attention as I look out at the world from my perspective. What follows is a record of what I see.

Dare to Bite the Apple, Dearie? Or, The Plan

The Rationale

My husband and I have turned/are turning 30 this year. We've enjoyed being young newlyweds and we've enjoyed progressively leaving the student lifestyle behind in order to pursue professional and/or adult activities. Now we want to sink our teeth into the next decade and live the happiest, healthiest life we can conjure up out of our respective talents and predilections. To that admirable end, we've taken a little time to consider where we are right now at the end of 2009, and where we want to be at the end of 2010.

As it stands, we are physically heavier than we want to be. We are both busier and yet less productive than we want to be. We are more financially indebted than we want to be. We are much less organized than we want to be. And our home is much, much messier than we want it to be.

We want to focus our next year on changing and improving our status quo.

The Goals

1. Reduce our debt and expenses.
2. Eat nutritious meals.
3. Exercise together.
4. Bring our professional work and our home life into balance.
5. Engage in a variety of fun, creative projects.

The Primary Solutions

1. Agree on a budget and abide by it.
2. Honor our budgeted credit cap.
3. Plan trips carefully to limit travel expenses.
4. Eat at, or eat from, home; pack lunches, snacks, and travel meals.
5. Plan meal structures and menus in advance.
6. Buy organic, earth-friendly goods in stores and join the local CSA.
7. Abstain from all soda pop and dairy cheese.
8. Exercise together first thing in the morning.
9. Take advantage of good weather to hike and play outdoors.
10. Make home maintenance chores a priority.
11. Empty the in-town storage unit before April 1st.
12. Adopt a regular schedule and follow it.
13. Leave work at work in the evenings.
14. Pursue hobbies primarily with supplies we already have.
15. Enjoy the videos, books, and games we already own or have access to.

The Lira-Specific Strategies

1. Withdraw spending money in cash; when it's gone, it's gone.
2. Create a personal food plan.
3. Spice up exercise sessions with my dance & workout DVDs.
4. Prioritize writing and teaching projects and complete in order.
5. Reserve video/computer entertainment for evening or weekend free time.

The Means of Follow-Through

1. Talk to God. About everything.
2. Check in with each other daily about progress and problems.
3. Blog the journey.
4. Write everything down in the daily planner and on the calendar.
5. Focus on accomplishments and celebrate often!
