Unknown Island North

"Unknown Island North" is culled from Annie Dillard's 1977 "Holy the Firm". A metaphor for a new thought on the horizon, it is "a new island, a new wrinkle, the deepening of wonder." Dillard finds various names for it as she sketches this new thing onto her drawing of the Puget Sound islands visible from her window. I suppose here, in my own way, I am seeking to name the things that most capture my attention as I look out at the world from my perspective. What follows is a record of what I see.

Daily Schedule

Today is Day 3 of our holistic health improvement project. This is the first day we've incorporated an adaptation into our schedule to accommodate Ecaep's special circumstances in the office today. We didn't exercise this morning so Ecaep could go into the office early. So we bumped our exercise routine over a day. We will make up the session on Saturday morning instead. So far, so good! Here's how we stand.

Of the Solutions:

3. Plan trips carefully to limit travel expenses. Check.
4. Eat at, or eat from, home; pack lunches, snacks, and travel meals. Check.
8. Exercise together first thing in the morning. Check.
9. Take advantage of good weather to hike and play outdoors. Check.
10. Make home maintenance chores a priority. Check.
12. Adopt a regular schedule and follow it. Check.
13. Leave work at work in the evenings. Erm, working on it.
14. Pursue hobbies primarily with supplies we already have. Check.

Of the Strategies:

4. Prioritize writing and teaching projects and complete in order. Check.
5. Reserve video/computer entertainment for evening or weekend free time. Check.

Of the Follow-through:

1. Talk to God. About everything. Check.
2. Check in with each other daily about progress and problems. Check.
3. Blog the journey. Check.
4. Write everything down in the daily planner and on the calendar. Check.
5. Focus on accomplishments and celebrate often! Check.

Not bad for the third day in, eh? Now to keep up the momentum!

The momentum is powered by the regular schedule we are living now. Ecaep's schedule centers on his workday, which is as it should be. Mine does too, but since I work at home it flows a little differently.
