Unknown Island North

"Unknown Island North" is culled from Annie Dillard's 1977 "Holy the Firm". A metaphor for a new thought on the horizon, it is "a new island, a new wrinkle, the deepening of wonder." Dillard finds various names for it as she sketches this new thing onto her drawing of the Puget Sound islands visible from her window. I suppose here, in my own way, I am seeking to name the things that most capture my attention as I look out at the world from my perspective. What follows is a record of what I see.

Checking In: End of February 2010

We've been doing remarkably well. We killed all credit card spending. We're eating much better. Exercise, that's a little tougher. I've been pretty regular with my routine, but my husband's schedule (eek, jury duty!) and my trip to Idaho has prevented us from exercising together. Fun and creative projects happen when we don't play too many computer games. Life isn't exactly balanced yet, but our priorities are changing for the good. And I've lost ten pounds since January 1st.

Huzzah!

Here are the specific solutions we are still working at.

  • Abstain from all soda pop and dairy cheese. Heh. Valentine's Day required fettuccine alfredo. Cheese is still a crazy temptation wherever I encounter the evil substance.
  • Make home maintenance chores a priority. Hard to do when we're not home. We'll work more at this one.
  • Exercise together first thing in the morning. So now that I'm back home, and Ecaep's jury duty is over, and Ecaep is getting over his cold, and I'm getting through this month's female cycle...maybe we can get back on track with this one.
  • Empty the in-town storage unit before April 1st. Cleaning, sorting, purging joy. I intend to tackle this once we get on top of the weekly housework.

But all in all, I'd say it's been a hopeful first two months. And kudos to us: in the last week of February, we're still taking our New Year's resolutions seriously.
